Walk EGNOS

Walk EGNOS

The project involves four partners coming from three different European Countries. Its objective is the creation of a social web 2.0 mapping solution generating and leveraging on the brand “EGNOS Powered”.
Nowadays GPS terminals and mobiles are today more and more used for leisure outdoor activities like hiking, biking and many other outdoor sports. With particular regard to leisure applications, a critical issue in using GNSS solutions is the availability of trustable maps of routes and paths, e.g. for hiking and mountain biking.
Till now, in order to face this issue, different approaches have been put in place. The easiest possibility is the generation of digital maps starting from traditional maps; however, this is not the best strategy because maps currently available are seldom accurate and updated. Another possibility is to perform a mapping activity with geodetic GPS terminals, but this strategy is not feasible due to high costs. The simplest solution would be the collection of tracks recorded by users equipped with GPS receivers, but it is not a professional strategy due to the lack of guarantees about the logged data. It has to be remarked that GPS does not foresee any kind of integrity information.
The basic idea of WalkEGNOS is to set up a solution consisting in a web site following the social network approach (web 2.0) with the goal of collecting data on a voluntary basis (e.g. hikers) with a new approach: GPS raw data collected by users will be uploaded to the WalkEGNOS back office system, capable to post process this information obtain an augmented and guaranteed track thanks to EGNOS information previously obtained from the EGNOS Data Access Service (EDAS). The resulting track will be available for other users from the WalkEGNOS front end website.
